Legend has it that King David of Israel once asked his jeweler for a ring that would make him happy when he is sad but would also make him sad when he was happy.
The jeweler thought he is going to lose his head to this impossible task, but Solomon, the King’s son, saw him and asked him what was wrong. When the jeweler explained his task to the prince, Solomon told him to write on the ring these words: “This, too, shall pass”, so that, by these words, when times are hard, the King will remember there will be better days to come; and when everything is going way too well, David will know that times might change for worse at anytime.
Disclaimer: There are many variants of where these words originate from – this is only one of them.

Legenda spune că Regele David al poporului Israel a cerut bijutierului său odată un inel care îl va face fericit atunci când este trist și îl va face trist atunci când este vesel.
Bijutierul se întristase crezând că își va pierde capul în urma acestei cereri imposibile, însă Solomon, fiul Regelui, l-a văzut și l-a întrebat ce îl face să fie atât de abătut. Când bijutierul i-a explicat prințului sarcina, Solomon i-a cerut să scrie pe inel următoarele cuvinte: “Și asta va trece”. Astfel, în urma acestor cuvinte, atunci când vremurile sunt grele, Regele se va îmbărbăta gândindu-se că vor veni vremuri mai bune; iar când toate lucrurile merg prea bine, David va ști că timpurile se pot schimba înspre rău în orice moment.
(Sunt mai multe variante care vorbesc despre originea acestei fraze – această legendă este una dintre ele).
