Gospodăria – în întâia jumătate a lunii, gospodina bună nu-și mai vede capul de câte are de făcut. Doar Paștele bat la ușă. Casa e de grijit, ouăle de încondeiat, cozonaci de făcut, pe lângă toate celelalte cerute de vreme, cum e îngrijirea cloștelor, a vițeilor de curând fătați.
Grădina de zarzavat – începe să dea cele dintâi roade. Usturoiul e măricel, iar mărarul, pătrunjelul sunt verzi. Semeni acum ridichea de lună. La sfârșitul lunii se seamănă fasolele, bostanii (dovlecii).
Livada – e ca ninsă de flori. Paza împotriva brumei care cade uneori și la Sf. Gheorghe, nu strică. Să nu rămână cuib de omidă în copaci.
Ogor – nearat să nu se vadă. E mai mare rușinea. Porumbul se seamănă după ce s-au saramurat grăunțele. Unde ogoarele de grâu sunt mici, se pot pune către sfârșitul lunii copiii la plivit buruienile stricătoare. Tot în luna aceasta se seamănă și cartofii ca și sfecla, dacă vremea e bună.
Citește pe Demostene ori Cicero; cărțile lui Plato, Aristotel, ale altora din timpul lor; eu admit că ele sunt atrăgătoare, mișcă și farmecă. Dar dacă, după ce le-ai citit, te întorci spre literatura Cărții Sfinte, vrând, nevrând, ea te va mișca așa de puternic, îți va pătrunde inima și se va întipări în mintea ta atât de mult, încât, comparate cu influența ei puternică, frumusețile filosofilor și poeților vechi vor dispărea aproape. Household – in the first half of the month, a good housewife can’t seem to get her head around things. Since Easter is just around the corner. The house needs to be taken care of, the eggs need to be painted, the cozonac needs to be baked, along other things that the time requires us to do, like taking care of the hens, the new-born calves.
The vegetable garden – starts to give the first harvest. The garlic is pretty grown, and dill and the parsley are green. Now it’s time to sow the month’s radish. At the end of the month should be sown the beans, the squash.
The orchard – is like snowed with flowers. Take heed against the hoar which sometimes falls even on St. George’s day. May there be no caterpillar’s nest in the trees.
The field – should not be unploughed. It is the highest shame. The corn should be sown after the seeds have been brined. Where the fields of wheat are small, at the end of the month children could weed out the damaging weeds. In this month, also could be planted the potatoes and the beet, if the weather allows.
Read Demostene or Cicero; Pluto’s books, or Aristotel’s, or others from their time; I admit they are attractive, they move you and the charm you. But if, after you read them, you go back to the literature of the Holy Book, whether you want to or not, it will move you so strong, so it will penetrate your heart and it will engraft in your mind so deeply, that, compared with it’s powerful influence, the beauty of the old philosophers and poets will almost disappear.
